Dr Lei Liu is an experienced Ophthalmologist with special interests in cataract, glaucoma, and retinal diseases. She has two decades of local and international experience, having trained and practised in Germany, the UK and Australia. Lei has completed two glaucoma fellowships, one at the Bristol Eye Hospital in the UK and the other at the Royal Victorian Ear and Eye Hospital.

Over the course of her career, Dr Liu has developed particular expertise in cataract surgery, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), glaucoma filtration and drainage surgery, and combined procedures for both cataracts and glaucoma. Additionally, she diagnoses and treats AMD, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion and a range of more general eye conditions.  

Dr Liu is an ophthalmology consultant the Alfred Hospital and senior lecturer at Monash University. She has a passion for training the younger generation, education and research.

Dr Liu has been an author and lead investigator on a number of peer-reviewed journal articles since 2004. Her research has centred around ocular immunology, and response and regulation in vascular eye diseases. Most recently, Dr Liu’s research at the Alfred has focused on retinal blood flow in glaucoma and diabetic patients undergoing OCT angiography. She is co-investigator for iStent clinical trial at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. Since 2006, Dr Liu has been the recipient of several international research grants, with funding totalling over $400,000.

Dr Liu is a creative thinker; she enjoys exploring alternate solutions to problems and has an open mind about what works best for each of her patients. She endeavours to provide her patients with the best possible eye care through her timely correspondence, personable nature and commitment to her work.

Lei speaks English and Mandarin, and is happy to conduct consultations in Mandarin.
